Omer Fast

There is no conventional beginning development and end in Omer Fast’s works, sometimes he even repeats the same story multiple times,or the story is told by multiple people. So that the audience can enter the story whenever they start watching. If the audiences look at the beginning, they will find that each repeat in the video is slightly different. For example: ‘5000 feet is best’. The scene in the video is very simple, the hotel corridors and rooms. The protagonist walked into the room from the corridor for an interview, then he came out to smoke and walked into the room again as the beginning. Every time the scene is the same, but the dialogue during the protagonist's interview has changed. He shows the variability of one single event. I'm interested in detail that when we are entering the memory of the protagonist, the person he mentioned can be changed through his modified description, for example, from a black man to a white man. This casual modification is directly shown to the audience, exposing the operations in the post-production process on purpose. In my work, I also intentionally kept some obvious editing mistakes, such as stiff repetitive clips in ‘The Green Light’. I intend to use these small inappropriate pieces to interrupt the audience's continuous thinking. His other work, "The casting (2007)", also retains very rough and stiff editing marks, such as the screen of the interview, which is edited by several different clips together. The audience can easily tell from the clothes worn by the characters. The artist used audio to connect those clips together. (This technique was also used in his work "CNN Concatenated (2002)". This work is comprised of the clips from CNN's news. The single word from different anchor was cut and then spliced into a paragraph.)

‘The casting (2007)’ displays the video with front and back screens. Different videos share the same soundtrack. ‘The Green Light’ refers to the same way, inviting the audio to be the visitor instead of the viewer for this installation. This way of a presentation effectively solves the problem of fighting different soundtracks when displaying narrative films on multiple screens. At the same time, the audience can move around to extend the time they watch the video.
